Dark Matter John Skinner Jig and Bounce Rod – I dare you to find a better all-around fluke fishing rod than the John Skinner Jig and Bounce series. I double dog dare you! The reason it’s so good at one specific angling technique, bucktailing fluke, is that John Skinner, the Vito Corleone of fluke bucktailing, has personally tested this rod until his hands bled. Then tested it some more. We went through quite a few individual prototypes until the final design was agreed upon. The result is a bounce casting rod that was scientifically designed to snap bucktails up off the bottom aggressively while still allowing the rod to give a major assist during hookset – loading pressure down the blank to the reel seat. This has been tough to find in off the shelf rods in previous years, as you’d typically get either a fast tip that’d work the bucktail great but yank lures out of the fluke’s grasp or moderate action rods that produced solid hooksets but a slow, tedious lure action that frequently went un-noticed by hungry flatties.
The John Skinner Jig and Bounce series rods are acid wrapped, with the guides wrapping down the spline of the rod to produce a much smoother retrieve while hooked up. Additionally, the ultra-tacky fore grip and extended butt were specifically designed for hours of bottom bouncing without fatigue.
Every aspect of this rod was thoroughly researched and well-applied. The John Skinner Jig and Bounce series represents the pinnacle of technique specific weapons that simply out fish mass-produced general-purpose rods of days past.
Here's what John has to say about this rod: "I designed this to be the perfect fluke jigging rod when using 1.5- to 6-ounce jigs. At 6 feet 8 inches, light-weight, and spiral-wrapped, this is an extremely comfortable rod to jig all day with. It has the best taper to put action on the jig while providing plenty of power to set the hook. The sensitivity is unparalleled, making it easier to distinguish between a fluke tap and a bottom bump. Lean on a good fish with this and you’ll notice it loads beautifully as it utilizes the middle of the rod to absorb fish shakes. No detail was overlooked. For example, the jigging hand grip is made of a special non-slip material because I know what it’s like to have a rod fly out of my hand because my hand was wet and had fish slime and Gulp juice on it. While my design target was the ultimate fluke jigging rod, I’ve used it to bucktail grouper in Florida, and I know this will also make an excellent rod for striped bass and blackfish as well."
