It was inevitable that Dark Matter John Skinner Jig and Bounce Spinning Rods would come out. With John dividing his time between Long Island and Florida, there are a lot of uses for a series of amazing spinning rods. The Jig and Bounce series features two models that were designed specifically to meet John's needs. The first is a 6'2" ML that John will primarily use for snap jigging. The second is a terrific all around jigging rod. The 6'3" M weighs in at just 5.4 ozs yet can easily handle big inshore fish. It's rated 1-5 ozs and is extremely versatile! Both models are built on a lightweight yet sensitive Dark Matter blank constructed of Korean M3 Nano Carbon. They feature Fuji alconite guides that are made for braided fishing lines. The 6'2" ML has cork grips and a graphite Fuji reel seat while the 6'3" M features the Dark Matter Tacky Grips and a Fuji VSS reel seat that is ergonomic and extremely comfortable. Whichever model you choose, these rods will deliver. The perfect blend of performance and style. Dark Matter rods are never boring and anything that John designs is great! Buy a Dark Matter John Skinner Jig and Bounce Spinning Rod and go catch some fish!

Here's what John has to say about this series: "From the first time I fished with the final version of the original Jig and Bounce casting rod, I knew I also wanted a spinning version built with the same components and action for jigging and bottom fishing. Some anglers prefer spinning gear for fluke jigging, especially when fishing the up-drift side of a party boat. This is an excellent fluke jigging rod because it was built using the lessons learned while developing the Jig and Bounce casting version. Grip material is an often-overlooked detail on a rod, but this uses the same high quality anti-slip components as the casting version. The grips are a product of the golf club industry, but they excel at preventing slippage caused by fish slime and Gulp juice. I especially wanted a rod like this for snap jigging the deeper Long Island Sound rips for stripers and sea bass, as well as for blackfishing in environments where light tackle jigging isn’t practical due to deep and fast-moving water. The final version of the rod was tested bucktailing and live-lining 10-50 lb Goliath Grouper in Florida, where it proved it will handle any striper or blackfish that comes its way."

Dark Matter John Skinner Jig and Bounce Spinning Rods come with a 1-year limited warranty. They are available in slate blue or avocado. Choose from two terrific models! If you're fishing in saltwater, this is the rod to get.

ANGLERS ARE ASKING

The Medium (M) model is a great option for fluke jigging and drifting, especially when fishing bucktails. It also doubles as a versatile setup for striped bass and other inshore species.

The Medium Light (ML) is better suited for lighter applications like blackfish and sheepshead where sensitivity and finesse matter more than lifting heavier jigs.

These spinning rods are designed with a responsive tip and strong backbone, but they are not built for heavy jig-and-bounce applications the way conventional rods are.

The M model can handle lighter jigging situations and still give you good control over your presentation, while the ML model is more finesse-oriented and excels when you need to feel subtle bites and maintain precise bottom contact.

  • ML (Medium Light): Best with lighter jigs and rigs, generally in the 1/2–2 oz range
  • M (Medium): Handles a wider range, roughly 3/4–6 oz depending on conditions

The M gives you more versatility for fluke and light striped bass jigging, while the ML is better for lighter bottom fishing where sensitivity is key.

Yes—and that’s really where these rods shine.

  • ML model: Ideal for blackfish (tog), sheepshead, porgy, and other light bottom species
  • M model: Great for fluke, schoolie striped bass, blackfish, and general inshore fishing

If you want one rod that can handle multiple inshore species, especially on the spinning side, this series is very versatile.

If you’re planning to fish heavy bucktails in deep water or strong current, especially using the traditional jig-and-bounce technique, a conventional setup will be a better choice.

The spinning models in this series are better suited for lighter applications and anglers who want versatility across multiple species. If you need a heavier-duty fluke setup, this is not the rod for that job.
