Dark Matter John Skinner Blackfish Jigs are designed to make hooking blackfish easier and more consistent. Created in collaboration with legendary tog angler John Skinner, these jigs take the proven banana-shaped blackfish jig design and refine it in every way.
At the heart of the jig is a custom Dark Matter 3X Strong Blackfish Jig Hook. The hook features a large eye that makes attaching clips quick and easy while the thick gauge wire delivers exceptional strength and rigidity. This dramatically reduces bend-outs when pulling big blackfish away from rocks and structure.
The hook also features a short gap design that passes a tog’s tough lips faster than wide-gap hooks, improving your chances of a solid hookset. Combined with a razor sharp point, this jig is built to maximize hookup ratios when the bite is subtle and conditions are tough.
From John Skinner
“Most experienced blackfish anglers will tell you that blackfish can be difficult to hook. These jigs make it easy. The jig is designed to sit on the bottom with the hook bend pointing up. When a blackfish picks up this jig, which features a relatively small and razor sharp hook, it's already in contact with or past those big ‘tog’ lips. At that point it's actually difficult to pull the jig away without hooking the fish. The 3X strong Dark Matter hook sets very easily and is strong enough to pull big fish out of structure. Just drop it to the bottom baited with your favorite blackfish bait, set the hook when you feel a few taps, then hold on!”
Dark Matter John Skinner Blackfish Jigs are available in 1/2 oz to 3 oz sizes and come in four proven blackfish colors: Chartreuse, Crab Guts, Green Crab and White Crab.

ANGLERS ARE ASKING
These jigs were designed with input from John Skinner, who has spent years dialing in what actually works for blackfish. The shape, balance, and hook placement are all based on real-world fishing—helping your bait get down quickly, stay in position, and improve your hookup ratio when fish are biting tight to structure.
John prefers jigs because they give you a more direct connection to the bait. You can feel every tap, react faster, and set the hook more effectively. In many situations, especially when fish are actively feeding, jigging allows you to outfish traditional rigs.
Choose the lightest jig that still allows you to hold bottom. In shallow water or light current, lighter jigs work best for a more natural presentation. In deeper water or stronger current, step up in weight to maintain control and keep your bait where it needs to be.
Yes, but there is a bit of a learning curve. Blackfish jigging requires feel and control, but once you get the hang of it, many anglers find it more effective and enjoyable than fishing traditional rigs.
Yes — these jigs are built around the exact style and techniques John uses in his own fishing. They’re not just endorsed—they reflect how he actually fishes for blackfish in real conditions.
