Throwing poppers for tuna is one of the most fun experiences you can have on the water. We created the Dark Matter Tuna Popping Rod for anglers to have a great stick for throwing big plugs topwater. The Dark Matter carbon blank is light in weight yet has the power to put pressure on big pelagics. The taper of the rod was designed so that you can get good distance on medium to large plugs. The Dark Matter Tuna Popping Rod is outfitted with Fuji Alconite guides, an EVA foregrip and a shrinkwrapped rear grip. The Fuji DSPM reel seat features a double locking nut so your reel will stay secure, even if you accidentally bump it against something. If you're going popping for tuna you need a rod that casts well and can handle the heat when hooked up. We designed the Dark Matter Tuna Popping Rod to do just that. Pair it with your favorite offshore spinning reel that's been loaded with braid and you are good to go!
Dark Matter has added a heavier version of this rod. The XH can handle big tuna! These rods are 7'10" and have a ferrule at the foregrip so you can travel with them to Panama, Costa Rica and other exotic locations for tuna popping.
Dark Matter Tuna Popping Rods come with a 1-year limited warranty. We wanted this rod to look as good as it performs so we made it this really nice grey color with black accents. We even put a tuna sticker on it.

ANGLERS ARE ASKING
Dark Matter Tuna Popping Rods are built to handle a wide range of tuna, from school-size fish to large bluefin. The specific model you choose will determine the ideal range, but all are designed with the backbone and lifting power needed for serious offshore fish while still allowing you to properly work topwater lures. The H pairs with a 14k while the XH is for an 18k.

These rods are best matched with braided line, typically in the 40–100 lb range depending on the setup. Braid allows for longer casts, better lure action, and maximum strength. Pair it with a fluorocarbon leader sized to your target species and conditions.
Yes — that’s exactly what they’re designed for. These rods are built to cast large topwater lures like poppers and stickbaits long distances while still giving you the power to properly work the lure and fight big fish once hooked up.
This rod is not ideal for anglers who primarily fish inshore or target smaller species. It’s also not the best choice if you prefer light tackle, finesse presentations, or plan to throw smaller lures. If you’re looking for a versatile, everyday rod for casual fishing or something ultra-light to cast all day with minimal effort, this setup will feel like overkill. These rods are built specifically for big fish, heavy drag, and large topwater lures.
